As you may have noticed we are diving into home DIY projects. We have lived in our home for one full year last month and we are just tackling the fixer upper list for the interior. During the spring we spruced up the yard with a flower bed area and removed some plants and trees. Aside from plants, flowers and a new fence we have more plans for outside specifically the backyard but I am so excited to work on the inside. When we purchased the house we thought of it as an easy fixer upper, no full blown remodel needed. We are making our way through each room making our house home. Before we finish the dining room I wanted to pause to share the before photos. Our dining area is small as we are using what is considered the formal dining room as a playroom. The kids totally run this home.
I had my heart set on a farm style table for awhile before moving in but my way of thinking has shifted slightly due to the Minimalism documentary and I’ll be updating our dining table instead of replacing it. I’ll share a blog post on my shift in thinking after watching the film at a later date, but know I’m not making drastic changes just small ones that still matter. I’ve decided to paint this high top table and chair set white, possibly a distressed white color. I’ve grown to love this table but that’s because we’ve been making memories as a family of 4 with it. The toddler now climbs up and sits to eat (he prefers the chair by the window) and the baby sits by us in the highchair and holds on to the base chair rods to practice his new standing skills.
Here’s what’s in the works, already done and my ideas for the space:
A few months back I moved our living room area run to the dining space and it looks like it belongs there so it won’t be going anywhere! I discovered the rug at Target for under $50 and it was must.
Yesterday I finished touching up the baseboards and window area with white paint to freshen it up. The grey paint tone is here to stay as it flows into the living area and kitchen area as well.
If you follow me on Instagram you might have noticed the ladder bookshelf (poking through in the corner on the photo below) has been updated. This stand was black and held my most favorite nerdy books and it’s now a distressed white and it holds some dining room essentials such as a cake stands and recipe books.
As I mentioned the table and chairs will be painted white. I’m nervous about this task because the chairs have so much going on to be sanded and painted but I shall tackle this task sooner than later.
The window. This window is massive and currently holds vertical blinds. I loathe vertical blinds in every way. I can’t wait to toss these bad boys out. I can’t pull the trigger on what type of window treatment I want in this space. Full disclosure I wish so badly this window didn’t exist. I know that sounds bad but I have a TON of natural lighting in our living room and kitchen area, like the entire back side of the house is a row of windows, so a blank wall to paint and decorate with would be amazing.
We plan to add wood floors throughout the entire house but that project is on hold for a bit so I’ll be sharing this room reveal prior to new flooring. New flooring will make such an impact!
Give me your thoughts and opinions, friends! Would you paint the table white or add a distressed tone to it? What would you do with window treatments in this area?
